Chairmans Report

To say that time passes quickly in a diving club is to say the least an understatement. Whether its last years memories of a good dive on the “Guide Me 2” in Dublin Bay or of some Latin moment for those who went to Cuba it all seems so far away now. But lets be done with nostalgia and lets get in gear for the 2003 season.

Pool
After a slow start many of us finally came to terms with the pool changes, new night, new venue and new time. Certainly going for a swim at 10pm on Thursdays requires an effort but at least its in Glenalbyn which once again has proven its worth in terms of its size and its ability to accommodate scuba training. For those of you who are not aware we are sharing the pool session (and costs) with Dalkey Sub Aqua Club and this is working out well. I would however advise instructors to be mindful of the number of people attending on any given week to ensure that the number of lanes provided reflects all our needs.

We will finish in the pool on 3rd April 2003.

New Members.
The committee considered that the club would limit the number of new trainees to manageable numbers in order to ensure better attention and support for them.. As it turned out we were not overwhelmed by applicants initially but we now have 8 new club members, some absolute beginners and some with previous diving experience. The club will make every effort to bring all new trainees through to Club Diver level by the end of the season.
For those of you who have not met our new members keep an eye out for;

  • Gerard O Dowd
  • Elena Coyle
  • Darragh Carroll
  • Ronan Kelehan
  • Philip Butler
  • Riandi Crais
  • Mark Seevers
  • Jean Kelleher

This year also has seen the return of some faces from a few years back, welcome again to Louise Hipwell and to Jamie Hargrave, and I understand that a few more faces from the past may wet their fins once again this year.

Diving 2003
The Club Diving Officer, Paul Cullen, has posted the dive plan for the year and already there is a considerable level of interest in the weekends away. Peadar who is running the Easter trip to Killary already has a full compliment, clearly there`s no substitute for charisma you either have it or you don’t, which in Peadar`s case leaves me lost for words.

For anyone in doubt about the diving plans for the year please check with Paul and he`ll put you in the picture. One thing that Paul and I have discussed at length is the need for good planning for all diving and that DODs follow the guidelines that Paul has laid down. It is also the responsibility for all Curragh divers to maintain best practice and to help out where possible to make the DO`s job more manageable. We have a great record in this club in terms of safety and good practice and we all want this to continue.

The DO and Training Officer have already given notice about snorkelling and diving pre requisites so there is nothing for me to add in this regard.
Paul has been putting out regular bulletins so I wont duplicate them here.
N.B. Remember that you are not insured until your registration fee has been paid over to CFT so please get your subscription paid on time so as to ensure you are covered when you dive.

While the rest of us took a sojourn from diving activities over the winter three club members were studying very hard on a myriad of diving related topics. Siobhan McGlinchey, Paul Walsh and Niall Stapleton were rewarded for their efforts when they all passed the Monitor 1 Diving Instructor examinations in February.

That`s all for now, So get your gear sorted and get diving.
