Spring ‘08

The year is flying by – we’ve already had two weekends away diving under our belts - Killary and Ballycastle.

In Killary it was windy and cold … but the diving was not bad for so early in the season. The trainees had their first taste of changing into wet and cold wetsuits in a biting wind, and I’m not sure that they all enjoyed it that much!
We all had our first dives of the season there, and I had my first dive ever where I spent more time over the water than under it! Sue, Dave (Alex) and I got loads of practice on the separation procedure!! Thankfully the vis improved after that!
The trainees did brilliantly, with, Joanna, Pamela, Garfield, Gary and Rob getting their qualifications over the weekend (or shortly after where they didn’t get in all the dives).
Thanks to DO Gerry, tower John, and all the instructors and helpers.

In Ballycastle we had fantastic diving over the May weekend. Some of us were lucky enough to get 2 dives at Dun Briste, which is a beautiful dive, full of life, colour, and the most spectacular of landscapes.

Thanks to DOD (Discipline) Niall, and the towers Jean, Gerry and Simon. And not to forget the dry cox’ns, who ensured a rapid turn around of sticks, without much time to look after their ‘natural needs’! Niall steered the weekend in his usual calm assured way, and of course lived by his ‘D’ principle, both during diving hours and after!!!

The weather and sea conditions made a huge difference to the type of diving on the two weekends, but the differences didn’t end there …

In Killary we went to bed to the sounds of Riverdance as dancers glided around the dance floor … and we woke up in the morning with Riverdance still in full flow, even if the footsteps were a tiny bit heavier! Jean (TO) played a blinder as Jean (Butler), but Rob has a bit to go as Michael Flatley!
In Ballycastle we went to bed to the strains of Willie McBride in a hole in a bog in a valley-o from Steve … and we woke up to that unmistakable sound of the battle cry of the Bannons, compliments of the Clan Leader from Fosters Avenue!

All in all we’ve had a great start to an early season, and of course it won’t end for many of us this year until well into November – happy days!!

Happy and safe diving to all.

Kevin
